Is it Really Possible to Remove Pet Stains and Smells from Carpets and Rugs?

Let’s face it: pet stains are inevitable. No matter how well trained our pets are, at one point or another, they will have an accident. This could be because you forget to take them outside, or they simply get nervous and lose control. The truth is, we can’t help but love our furry friend, and the best we can do as pet owners is accept that it is going to happen and be prepared for when this time comes. The good news is, you can get rid of pet stains and carpet odors with these simple steps.

Step 1: We all dread this first step, but we have to do it. The moment you notice an accident, you should clean up as much as you can with a paper towel, or a towel that can be disposed of. (Don’t forget the gloves!) When cleaning up the mess, do your best not to spread the stain. This means that you must be as gentle as possible and avoid pressing into the carpet.

Step two: Next, you will want to treat the stain. If you have Oxiclean in the house, you can use this mixture:

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons Oxiclean
  • 1 tsp dawn original dish soap

Or, if you don’t have Oxiclean you can use this mixture:

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2 tsp dawn original dish soap
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide

Once you have the mixture made, begin by dabbing the it onto the stain with a clean washcloth. Next, you should grab a scrub brush and do your best to scrub out the stain. Once you have scrubbed, you can use a damp washcloth to dry the spot and remove as much as you can from the stain. You can do this step as many times as you’d like and then let it dry.

Step 3: We hate to break it to you, but the stain in your carpet will never be completely removed until you have your carpets deep cleaned. The stain might fade, or it may even go away, but the odor won’t. No matter how many times you vacuum or spray odor products, the carpet won’t be one hundred percent clean.

You might not even have stains in your home (if this is the case, you are a lucky pet owner!) but your carpet will have animal odor on it. Often times, pet owners don’t even notice an odor because they are so used to the scent of their home. It is recommended that you have your carpets deep cleaned at least once a year. If you have a pet, you will want to deep clean your carpets at least twice a year. If your animal has several accidents, you may even consider a few more times a year. Deep cleaning your carpets is the only way to really remove stains and odors from your pet!
